The U.S. men’s national team lost to Colombia in the first game of the Copa America Centenario on Friday night.
Los Cafeteros scored twice in the first half and held the American attack in check throughout.
Colombia was led by Real Madrid star James Rodriguez, who fans might remember for scoring on this stunning volley at the 2014 World Cup. Along with James, AC Milan’s Carlos Bacca and Juventus’s Juan Cuadrado formed an impressive attack.
Though Rodriguez scored the second goal of the game, he exited in the 70th minute with an apparent shoulder injury.

Colombia struck first on a goal by Cristian Zapata off a corner kick by Edwin Cardona. Zapata curled behind the USA defense and volleyed the ball past Brad Guzan.
James Rodriguez scored the second goal of the match on a penalty after DeAndre Yedlin was called for a hand ball in the box. Guzan guessed the wrong direction and Rodriguez buried the goal into the bottom corner.
The U.S. had a chance to get one back in the 62nd minute on a free kick by Clint Dempsey but David Ospina made the save. Darlington Nagbe and 17-year-old Christian Pulisic and were subbed on shortly afterward.
James Rodriguez was subbed off in the 70th minute after appearing to injure his shoulder.
The U.S. couldn’t manage to find the net and the match ended 2–0. The next match for the Americans is June 7 against Colombia in Chicago.
