New York Red Bulls sign Jesse Marsch to multi-year extension
After entering under difficult circumstances, Jesse Marsch delivered promising results for the New York Red Bulls, and he's been rewarded accordingly.
The Red Bulls announced they've locked up Marsch, the 2015 MLS Coach of the Year, with a new multi-year contract. The terms of the deal were not disclosed. After Mike Petke was fired, in a move wildly unpopular among the Red Bulls fan base, Marsch guided the club to the MLS Supporters' Shield last season as the team with the most points in the regular season along with a place in the Eastern Conference semifinals, where it fell to Columbus Crew SC.
Following a rough patch to start the 2016 season, the Red Bulls have come on strong, trailing the Philadelphia Union by four points for first place in the conference through 14 matches. The Red Bulls are 5-1-1 in their last seven matches, including a memorable 7-0 thrashing of New York City FC and a 3-0 win at Toronto FC in their last two games before the break for Copa America.
Marsch, 42, was a former assistant for the U.S. men's national team under Bob Bradley before guiding the Montreal Impact in their expansion season. He won three MLS Cups as a player, two with D.C. United and one with the Chicago Fire.
