New Liverpool No. 1 goalkeeper Loris Karius will miss the next 8-10 weeks and the start of the Premier League season after suffering a broken hand.
The injury occurred in Liverpool's International Champions Cup friendly vs. Chelsea on Wednesday night at the Rose Bowl. The 23-year-old was coming out to punch the ball and made contact with teammate Dejan Lovren's head instead. Karius was in line to start for Liverpool, which will now need to turn back to Belgium's Simon Mignolet for the opening few weeks of the new campaign.
Alex Manninger, 39, will serve as the backup for Jurgen Klopp's side, which opens the Premier League season against Arsenal at the Emirates on Aug. 14.
Karius signed with Liverpool from Mainz for £4.7 million in May.
