Watch: Zlatan Ibrahimovic nets Community Shield winner for Manchester United
Manchester United will enter the new Premier League season with a piece of silverware after defeating Leicester City 2-1 on Zlatan Ibrahimovic's game-winning goal to lift the Community Shield.
The annual match between the reigning Premier League champion and FA Cup winner contained more intrigue than usual, given that it was Jose Mourinho's return to a competitive fixture since being ousted from Chelsea–after losing to Claudio Ranieri and Leicester City. The buzz before the match surrounded Paul Pogba, who Manchester United announced had arrived in Manchester for a medical ahead of his awaited transfer.
It was bookended by Ibrahimovic's goal, which came in the 83rd minute. After a rather quiet day on the whole at Wembley Stadium, Ibrahimovic made his impact, out-leaping Wes Morgan for an Antonio Valencia cross and tucking a header inside the far post.
Leicester's Shinji Okazaki nearly opened the scoring twice in the 20th minute, first having a chance deflected just wide of David de Gea's goal and then having his glancing header off the ensuing corner kick rattle the crossbar.
Jesse Lingard did the honors of scoring the opener in the 32nd minute, completing a fantastic solo run, weaving through Leicester defenders, and beating goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel, who got a foot to the shot but couldn't keep it out. It was at Wembley where Lingard's impressive volley won the FA Cup for Manchester United in the spring.
Jamie Vardy equalized in the 52nd minute, rounding David De Gea and finishing into an empty net after pouncing on a poor back pass from Marouane Fellaini.
Leicester kicks off its Premier League title defense Saturday against Hull City in the league's opening match of the season, while Manchester United travels to Bournemouth on Sunday.
