Before Christian Benteke completed a hat trick, he set a world record Monday, scoring seven seconds into Belgium's World Cup qualifier against Gibraltar for the fastest goal in the history of World Cup or qualifying play.

Benteke cut off a slight backward pass, beat one defender and finished with relative ease, giving Belgium the early 1-0 lead. That was doubled 18 minutes after by Axel Witsel and Benteke sandwiched a Dries Mertens strike with two more for his hat trick, sending the Red Devils on their way to a third straight three-point haul to open Group H play in UEFA's qualifying tournament. Belgium beat Bosnia-Herzegovina 4-0 on Friday.

The previous record, according to the Associated Press, was held by San Marino's Davide Gualtieri, who scored after eight seconds against England in a 1993 qualifier.

Along with Gibraltar and Bosnia-Herzegovina, Belgium is grouped with Greece, Estonia and Cyprus.
