MANCHESTER, England (AP) – Manchester United has made Victor Lindelof the team's first offseason signing, bringing in the Sweden center back from Benfica for 35 million euros ($39.4 million).

Both clubs announced the transfer on Wednesday.

Objective achieved, bar raised for Mourinho, Manchester United after UEL title

Lindelof made 32 appearances this season as Benfica retained the Portuguese league title. He began his career with Vasteras SK and moved to Benfica in 2011, progressing through the club's youth system before establishing a place in the first team during the 2015-16 season.

United manager Jose Mourinho said Lindelof is a ''very talented young player,'' adding ''our season last year showed us that we need options and quality to add depth to the squad.''
