Manchester United fans are worried by an unexpected surprise in Juan Mata’s recent blog post, claiming that promising academy player Angel Gomes' future at the club may be over.

Mata, who writes a regular blog about his life, mentioned 17-year-old United starlet Angel Gomes in his blog as ‘former teammate Angel Gomes’ whilst congratulating him on being part of the England squad that won the Under-17 World Cup.

Gomes, who made his debut in the last game of the previous season, came on for departing captain Wayne Rooney and became the first player born in 2000 to make his top-flight debut.

After scoring 12 goals in 19 starts for the Under-18 side during the 2016-17 campaign, Gomes became the youngest recipient of the Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award.

Previous recipients of the award include Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs and Marcus Rashford, all of whom went on to become top United first-team players.

With United fans rating the youngster very highly, some are comparing the situation to Paul Pogba’s exit, where Pogba left United in 2012 to join Italian giants Juventus for nothing and ended up becoming one of the most talented midfielders in the game.

Whilst no official statement has come from United about any developments whatsoever, regarding Gomes’ career, Mata referring to him as a ‘former teammate’ could signify that such an announcement may not be far away.

Last month, The Sun reported that Gomes could leave the club for free as a number of high profile clubs, including Barcelona, aim to sign him up.

The Sun also claims Gomes was set to sign his first senior contract with the club back in August, but is still yet to put pen to paper on a deal two months later.

Some believe that the whole situation was just grammatical error on Mata's behalf.

Either way, the lack of any official announcement from the club will keep nervy United fans eager to find out more.
