Liverpool's struggles in defense have been well-documented this season.
Liverpool's struggles in defense have been a big talking point for fans this season. With 17 goals conceded in 11 Premier League games, Liverpool's need for more defensive reinforcements has been well-documented.
One man Liverpool are said to be chasing ahead of the January transfer window is Lazio and Netherlands center back Stefan de Vrij, according to Calciomercato.
The 25-year-old is having a fine season in Rome, with his Lazio side, who have lost just once all season, currently sitting in fourth place in the Serie A table, just four points off leaders Napoli.
Liverpool have apparently been encouraged in their chase to sign de Vrij after it was reported that the release clause in his Lazio contract is just €25m. Italian sports journalist Niccolo Ceccarini revealed the low price tag in an interview with TMW Radio.
He told the station: "On de Vrij, Lazio may have lowered their demands concerning his release clause. At €25m, an agreement can be found. As for his salary, Lazio will offer him a big salary which would see him become one of the highest paid players in their team if he renews his deal with the club".
Liverpool are not alone in their interest in the Dutch defender and several other clubs may look to capitalise on the low release clause, with Juventus particularly interested.
De Vrij, who is also known for his aerial threat with two goals to his name this season, is in the final year of his contract and Liverpool may be encouraged to move quickly to wrap up his signing rather than enter a Bosman battle with a host of European giants.
