Paul Scholes Out as Oldham Manager After a Month

The former Manchester United and England midfielder said Thursday he was leaving fourth-tier team Oldham Athletic with immediate effect.

OLDHAM, England (AP) – Paul Scholes' first senior job in soccer management lasted just 31 days.

The former Manchester United and England midfielder said Thursday he was leaving fourth-tier team Oldham Athletic with immediate effect.

In a statement to Britain's Press Association, Scholes said that ''in the short period since I took on the role it unfortunately became clear that I would not be able to operate as I intended and was led to believe prior to taking on the role.''

Scholes won his first match in charge of his hometown club, before drawing three and losing three of his next six.

Scholes said ''I hoped to, at the very least, see out my initial term of 18 months as the manager of a club I've supported all my life. The fans, players, my friends and family all knew how proud and excited I was to take this role.''
