Christian Pulisic Cleared to Play for USMNT vs. Netherlands Saturday
Captain America is back.
United States men’s national team star Christian Pulisic has been cleared to play in Saturday’s game against the Netherlands, the team announced Friday.
Pulisic was diagnosed with a pelvic contusion after he collided with Iran keeper Alireza Beiranvand when scoring the heroic goal that ultimately sent the U.S. to the round of 16 on Tuesday. He was subbed out at halftime and did not return to the field.
However, the American camp had remained optimistic about Pulisic’s status moving forward. Speaking to reporters on Thursday, the 24-year-old said he was “feeling better” and coach Gregg Berhalter said Friday that he was “hopeful” to have the star forward back for the Netherlands match.
Berhalter also revealed that Pulisic “looks pretty good,” but that he and the staff wanted to see him on the pitch before giving any further confirmation on his status. Pulisic was seen at training with the team both Thursday and Friday, though it remains unclear what his exact level of participation was.
Pulisic said Thursday that he was taking the injury “day-by-day” and doing “everything in my power to be able to be out there on the field on Saturday.”
The USMNT did not clarify if Pulisic has any restrictions for Saturday’s match, but it’s no secret that the American side will need him to contribute in a major way. Kickoff for the round-of-16 match against the Netherlands is scheduled for 10 a.m. ET on Fox.
