Inter Miami CF Breaks Ground on New Stadium Amid Messi Madness
Since arriving in MLS, Lionel Messi has injected new life into Inter Miami CF, turning them from one of the worst teams in the league to one of the best. As a result, Inter Miami is taking advantage of Messi’s presence to establish its future.
On Monday, Inter Miami announced that it has broken ground on construction of a new 25,000 seat stadium that will be located closer to Miami. Currently, Inter Miami plays in DRV PNK Stadium, which is located in Fort Lauderdale, about 30 miles north of Miami.
The organization and city had been planning to build not only a new soccer-centric stadium, but also an entertainment area around it that will be named Miami Freedom Park. The area will also include a public park with youth soccer stadiums, along with tourist attractions like shops, hotels and restaurants.
“In just four years we have changed the perception worldwide of American soccer. As we commence construction of Miami Freedom Park that same vision guides us,” Inter Miami CF owner Jorge Mas said. “In creating a multi-faceted space we will set a new standard of what sport complexes can be.”
The new stadium is expected to open in 2025, while the entire Miami Freedom Park area is expected to be complete by 2030.
Since Messi’s first game with his new club in late July, Inter Miami is 9–0, including three wins by penalty kicks, and a championship in the inaugural Leagues Cup tournament. Messi himself has 11 goals in just eight games with Inter Miami this season.
