Cristiano Ronaldo Explains How Rivalry With Lionel Messi Has Changed
With Cristiano Ronaldo in Saudi Arabia and Lionel Messi playing for MLS side Inter Miami, one of soccer’s greatest rivalries is on its way out.
Ronaldo seemingly agrees with that sentiment, telling Portuguese outlet Record as much during a recent interview during which he declared the rivalry “is gone.”
“I don’t see things like that. The rivalry is gone. It was good, spectators liked it,” said Ronaldo. “Those who like Cristiano Ronaldo don't have to hate Messi and vice versa. We've done well, we have changed the history of football. We are respected all over the world, that's the most important thing.
“The legacy lives on, but I don't see the rivalry like that. We shared the stage many times, it was 15 years. I'm not saying we're friends, I've never had dinner with him, but we're professional colleagues and we respect each other,” added the 38-year-old.
Ronaldo exited Manchester United in November of 2022 and signed for Saudi Pro League club Al-Nassr after the FIFA World Cup. Since arriving, he’s already added to his trophy case, winning the Arab Club Champions Cup in August.
Messi has also won a trophy since moving to Inter Miami, having led the team to a Leagues Cup title. In doing so, he became soccer’s most decorated player in history, as a winner of 44 trophies across his illustrious career.
With the two superstars nearing the end of their career and both having departed from Europe, Ronaldo is under the impression that their rivalry has reached its curtain call.
