After a successful preseason concluded with a 3–0 victory over Schalke, Real Madrid’s 2026–27 campaign gets underway at Espanyol on Saturday evening.

The new La Liga season is already a week old, but the league‘s top dogs were granted the opening weekend off due to their heavy World Cup contingents. Madrid and Barcelona are poised to do battle at the summit once again this term, with the former aiming to close an eight-point gap on the champions.

The return of José Mourinho for a second spell in charge means there’s an abundance of intrigue surrounding Los Blancos, with a glut of new signings spreading excitement around the capital. Whethey they’ve chosen the right path to stymie Hansi Flick’s juggernaut will be revealed in time, but the club nonetheless seems optimistic ahead of their trip to the RCDE Stadium.

What’s Next for Real Madrid?

After their start to the La Liga season was pushed back a week, Real Madrid open up with three matches in the space of eight days.

Their opening home match of the season is scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 26 against Real Sociedad, then the newly promoted Malaga visit the Bernabéu the following Sunday.

Madrid will also learn their league phase opponents in this season’s Champions League when the draw takes place next Thursday.
