Serena Williams got off to a slow start, but rallied to beat Tsvetana Pironkova 5-7, 6-1, 6-1 in the first round of the French Open. Serena has never lost in the first round.

Venus Williams fought off bad weather and France's Alize Cornet to win 6-4, 6-3 on Monday.

Igor Andreev of Russia upset Andy Roddick, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4.

For the first time in at least 30 years, no U.S. men will advance to the second round of the French Open, including third-seeded Andy Roddick.

Jelena Jankovic, one of the favorites heading into the French, advanced to the second round by beating Stephanie Foretz 6-2, 6-2.

Top-ranked Roger Federer beat Michael Russell of the U.S. 6-4, 6-2, 6-4 in a first-round match that started Monday and ended Tuesday due to rain delay.

Maria Sharapova beat Emilie Loit in two sets on Wednesday.

Amelie Mauresmo, the 2006 Wimbledon champion, beat Laura Granville 6-0, 7-5 on her home turf. Mauresmo is hoping to win her first French Open title.

James Blake didn't play his first-round match until Day 3, and then lost to Ivo Karlovic of Croatia.
