No. 73 ousts Peer in Barcelona
BARCELONA, Spain (AP) -- No. 1 seed Shahar Peer of Israel was bounced from the first round of the Torneo Barcelona by unseeded Nuria Llagostera Vives of Spain on Tuesday, 7-5, 6-2.
Peer rallied from 0-4 to tie the first set at 5 against the 73rd-ranked Llagostera Vives before fading light halted play on Monday. But she lost eight of 10 games when play resumed Tuesday.
No. 3 Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia also was eliminated along with No. 8 Tathiana Garbin of Italy.
Cibulkova retired at 5-6 in the first set against France's Stephanie Cohen-Aloro, while Garbin lost to Russia's Ekaterina Ivanova 4-6, 7-5, 6-3.
No. 2 Maria Kirilenko of Russia comfortably advanced to the second round against Lilia Osterloh of the United States. Osterloh lost the first set 6-0 and then retired at 0-2 in the second.
Fourth-seeded Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic cruised past Spain's Leticia Costas 6-2, 6-1, while No. 6 Sara Errani of Italy also won, 6-3, 6-2 over Spain's Lourdes Dominguez Lino.
Spain's Carla Suarez Navarro, who reached the quarterfinals of the French Open last week, defeated Australia's Alicia Molik 6-2, 6-4.
