Open fashion hits: Ana, A-Rod, even Murray

Why do we care about tennis fashion? I mean, really, it's clothing that people are sweating in as they're competing at the highest level of their sport. In the grand scheme of things, it's totally trivial. But, hey, if I'm staring at a person for two to five hours, it kind of helps if I'm not distracted by the eyesore that is his or her kit. And it's even better if a player actually looks good.

Here are my picks for the outfits done right at the U.S. Open. You can also check out my fashion misses and SI.com's gallery of several players.

Ana Ivanovic: Granted, you could probably put Ana in a potato sack and she'd still pull it off. But I love the color and the dress is the perfect combination of athleticism and elegance.

Andy Roddick: Sometimes it's all about accessories, and A-Rod's red shoes are just pitch-perfect. Also, are my eyes deceiving me or is he wearing a shirt that kinda almost fits? Sure, it's still two sizes too big, but that's a huge improvement over the four-size-too-big shirts he used to wear. Looking like a kite is never an intimidating look.

Maria Kirilenko: Before Stella McCartney fell for Caroline Wozniacki, it was Kirilenko who donned the fashion designer's signature looks for Adidas. Now, while Wozniacki is underwhelming in her Stella (has Stella ever looked as good as when MaKiri wore it?), Kirilenko is rocking in her Adidas Competition kit. Love the yellow flare in the shoes and, of course, the pom-pom socks.

Andy Murray: The fact that Murray is wearing a color other than gray, blue or white is breaking news in and of itself. So seeing the Scot in his bright red and black kit was a bit jarring initially. But the bold colors work for him and make him look like the modern athlete he is. And with Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic all getting their own signature kits, it's nice that Adidas finally gave Murray one that was worth noticing.

Serena Williams: The only thing Serena needs to complete her outfit is a pair of pom-poms. Bring it on, indeed.

John Isner: If you can successfully make a 6-foot-9 guy look like the world's lankiest bumblebee, I'm pretty much going to buy whatever you're selling. There's nothing particularly edgy or avant-garde here, but the yellow has been popping all week and it looks clean and fresh. Which is saying something considering that Big John almost never looks fresh.
