Daily Bagel: Rafael Nadal steps down from ATP Players' Council

The Daily Bagel is your dose of the interesting reporting, writing and quipping from around the Internet.

• This has to be the greatest ace celebration you've ever seen. Last night against Ana Ivanovic, Venus Williams fired back-to-back aces to hold her serve. She punctuated the second ace with an incredible head-snap so full of swag, I could not stop laughing for at least 10 minutes.

Rafael Nadal has resigned from the ATP Players' Council. Reports The Daily Telegraph:

"Nadal’s resignation appears to have had little to do with the main issue preoccupying the player council at present, which is the size of their pay packets at the four Grand Slam tournaments. Rather, it has been triggered by the lack of movement on Nadal’s pet project, the introduction of a two-year ranking system. He has argued repeatedly that this is the best way to prolong the careers of the leading players, by making it easier for them to withdraw from tournaments when they have physical ailments."

Really? Over the ranking system, Rafa?

• Mardy Fish has finally notched back-to-back wins in 2012, working his way into the Round of 16 in Miami. But as Peter Bodo observes, it's still all mental with Mardy.

"But the element that really seemed to unnerve Fish was the fear that he was backsliding toward a version of his self that was overweight, underachieving, and content in his discontent. That was the identity he vanquished and kept at bay all of last year, and it's apparently the one that has recently been stirring again."

• Daniel Koellerer, aka "Crazy Dani," has been banned from tennis for engaging in match-fixing. I'm not sorry to see him go. He was entertaining for all the wrong reasons.

• The term "seeds" or "seeding" as it applies to tournament brackets, apparently originated in tennis.

• espnW has set up a separate section of its site solely devoted to the 40-year anniversary of the passage of Title IX.

• Non-tennis: Don't worry, New York. Tim Tebow is very "excited" about being a Jet. Here is video proof.
