• Newly crowned PGA champion Rory McIlroy is making the rounds in Cincinnati. When he's not supporting girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki, he's hanging with Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic.

• The tennis community is up in arms over the NCAA's idea to play a 10-point match tiebreaker instead of a full third set -- one of several proposals to reduce match length. Colette Lewis, who covers the juniors and college players, weighs in:

Even if I were to agree with their premise that matches are too long, which I don't believe to be true, this is curing the disease by killing the patient. College tennis as a development option will no longer exist, the best juniors will bypass college, the level will drop and the current outstanding product will be turned into a NCAA-sanctioned World Team Tennis-type exhibition.

• Doug Robson spoke with a U.S. Davis Cup team doctor for a story about Rafael Nadal's long-term health:

Joshua Dines, a member of the Sports Medicine and Shoulder Service at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York and a team doctor for the U.S. Davis Cup tennis team, says patellar tendinitis gets better 90% of the time with rest and treatment. "The problem is that this has been ongoing," said Dines, who has not treated Nadal but often deals with tennis injuries. "The conservative approach, which they have been taking, doesn't seem to be working."

• Nadal is shooting to return for Davis Cup in September, according to his uncle and coach, Toni Nadal.

• Federer on Nadal's withdrawal from the U.S. Open:

"Well, not a surprise, because I wrote him and he told me it wasn't looking good at all. I kind of knew. Saw it coming. But obviously when it's official it's disappointing for tennis, there's no doubt about it. I would love to have him in the draw. In particular, sort of the 12 days before the Open you figure he might still have time to fix what he has to fix to get ready. If he pulls out that early before the Open, it must be something serious.

"That's what is sort of scary. There is obviously the whole debate going on if he is going come back for this year. I hope he will. He's definitely got some more weeks off now because of it. I hope in hindsight this is a very smart decision by him. But it's obviously a big blow and disappointing news for the tennis world."
