ASTANA, Kazakhstan (AP) ? Kazakhstan pulled off an unexpected victory over Austria on Sunday to advance to the quarterfinals of the Davis Cup.

Andrey Golubev beat Jurgen Melzer 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 in the reverse singles of the World Group 1st round tie for Kazakhstan to take an insurmountable 3-1 lead, resulting in the entire team breaking into an on-court celebration dance. The last reverse singles will not be played.

Kazakhstan began strongly Friday when Golubev beat Andreas Haider-Maurer in the opening match, and Evgeny Korolev defeated Jurgen Melzer in straight sets.

In Saturday's doubles match, Alexander Peya and Julian Knowle kept Austria's hopes by winning a tightly fought contest against Golubev and Yuriy Schukin. Kazakhstan next plays the Czech Republic away in April.
