In the high-profile, big-stakes battle between the WTA's top two players, Serena Williams secured her 16th Slam title Saturday, defeating Maria Sharapova 6-4, 6-4 to win her second French Open. The 31-year-old No. 1 has won three of the last four Slams and became the oldest woman to win at Roland Garros in the Open Era.
Her 16 major titles leads all active women and she's just two behind Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert for fourth place on the all-time list (Margaret Court has 24). Among active players, she's now just one behind Roger Federer's mark of 17 Slam titles. She'll have a great chance to catch him when Wimbledon begins in two weeks.
