Venus Williams ousted by Eugenie Bouchard at Family Circle Cup

Venus Williams pushed Eugenie Bouchard to three sets in Charleston but couldn't hang on for the win.

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- Venus Williams lost to Eugenie Bouchard 7-6 (6), 2-6, 6-4 at the Family Circle Cup.

The 20-year-old Canadian lost her serve to Williams in the final set to fall behind 2-1 Thursday. But Bouchard rallied with a break of her own to get back on track.

Bouchard closed the match with another service break, reaching Williams' drop shot and pushing it into the open court for her first victory over the seven-time Grand Slam champion.

The loss ends a run of success for the Williams family on the courts of Charleston, S.C.

Sister Serena was the two-time defending tournament champion before losing Tuesday night. Venus played with the Washington Kastles on the green clay to win the 2012 World Team Tennis title.

Sara Errani rallied to defeat Peng Shuai 7-6 (6), 7-6 (5) and advance to the Family Circle Cup quarterfinals.

The 11th-ranked Errani had lost her past three matches to China's Peng and appeared in trouble Thursday after trailing 6-5 in each set. Errani squandered three match points in the second-set tiebreaker until she placed a drop shot that Peng could not track down to finish it.

Daniela Hantuchova won a third-round match over Teliana Pereira in straight sets.
