Rory McIlroy has called off his engagement with Caroline Wozniacki.

“There is no right way to end a relationship that has been so important to two people,” McIlroy said in a statement. “The problem is mine. The wedding invitations issued at the weekend made me realize that I wasn’t ready for all that marriage entails. I wish Caroline all the happiness she deserves and thank her for the great times we’ve had."

The couple started dating in 2011 and revealed their engagement on Dec. 31. McIlroy tweeted Sunday about having dinner with Wozniacki. Last month, Wozniacki watched McIlroy at the Masters.

McIlroy's announcement comes four days before the start of the French Open, where Wozniacki is the 13th seed. Wozniacki, 23, has withdrawn from two tournaments during the clay-court season, including the Italian Open last week, when she cited a knee injury.

McIlroy, 25, the 10th-ranked golfer in the world, is playing the BMW PGA Championship in England this week. He described the split as mutual and amicable.
