Townsend learns lessons in first-round loss to Serena

The 21-year-old is now 21-19 this year.

Last year, Stephens made it to the fourth round of the U.S. Open, but lost in straight sets to the eventual tournament champion, Serena Williams.

That fourth-round exit was the best finish of Stephens' U.S. Open career.

Since turning pro in 2009, Stephens' best finish came during the 2013 Australian Open. She reached the semifinals as the No. 29 seed, but lost to eventual champion Victoria Azarenka in straight sets. Stephens had to beat Serena Williams in the quarterfinals to advance to the semis.

Prior to losing to Maria Kirilenko at Wimbledon, Stephens had made it to the fourth round or better at six straight majors.
