Matches to watch

Philipp Kohlschreiber (22) vs. John Isner (13)

The top-ranked American in the tournament, John Isner defeated fellow countryman Marcos Giron and German Jan-Lennard Struff on the way to the third round. Isner's best finish at the U.S. Open came in 2011, when he advanced to the quarterfinals. He has exited in the third round each of the last two years at the hands of his third-round opponent this year, Philipp Kohlschreiber.

Kohlschreiber made it to the Wimbledon quarterfinals in 2012, but he hasn't advanced past the fourth round in any other major tournament appearance. The German's best finishes at the U.S. Open came the last two years, in which he advanced to the fourth round.

Novak Djokovic (1) vs. Sam Querrey

Novak Djokovic, who lost the 2013 U.S. Open Final to Rafael Nadal, advanced to the third round of this year's tournament with a thumping 6-1, 6-3, 6-0 victory over Paul-Henri Mathieu in the second round. In July, Djokovic won Wimbledon, the seventh grand slam title of his career.

Querrey, an American, has made it to the fourth round of the U.S. Open twice, though he hasn't advanced that far since 2010. Querrey upset Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 in the second round.

Serena Williams (1) vs. Varvara Lepchenko

Serena Williams is looking for her third-straight U.S. Open crown this year. She has won five Open titles and 17 total grand slam championships in her career, though her best result at a major tournament so far this year was a fourth-round appearance at the Australian Open.

After topping Taylor Townsend in the first round, Williams crushed Vania King 6-1, 6-0 in the second round. Williams' third-round opponent is Varvara Lepchenko, who also has not yet conceded a set in the tournament. Lepchenko has only appeared in the third round of the U.S. Open once before this year, in 2012.
