CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) Second-seeded Ekaterina Makarova overcame a slow start in her first match on clay and defeated Shuai Zhang of China 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 at the Family Circle Cup on Wednesday.

Makarova, ranked eighth in the world, lost the doubles final at the Miami Open last weekend and didn't get much time to practice on the slower clay surface. It showed. Makarova found herself down a set and trailing 2-1 in the second set.

That's when the 26-year-old Russian turned things up, winning five of the last six games in the second set to even the match. Makarova won the final four games of the final set to advance.

Top-seeded Eugenie Bouchard and No. 4 seed Sara Errani play later Wednesday.

No. 12 seed Belinda Bencic lost to qualifier Danka Kovinic 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.
