Lucky loser Tsurenko advances at Connecticut Open

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) Ukrainian Lesia Tsurenko beat the Czech Republic's Barbora Strycova 6-3, 6-0 to move to the third round Tuesday afternoon at the Connecticut Open.

Tsurenko was a lucky loser entry after top seed Simona Halep withdrew due to injury and won her first match despite a brief rain delay.

Tsurenko is ranked 46th in the world. She said it was ''really exciting for me to get into the main draw, and I was really happy.''

Also on Tuesday, Slovakia's Dominika Cibulkova beat France's Kristina Mladenovic 2-6, 7-6 (1), 7-5 to reach the third round.

In doubles play, Germany's Julia Goerges and the Czech Republic's Lucie Hradecka advanced with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Poland's Klaudia Jans-Ignacik and Romania's Raluca Olaru. Taiwan's Hao-Ching Chan and Australia's Casey Dellacqua advanced to the second round, as did Germany's Anna-Lena Groenefeld and Sweden's Johanna Larsson.
