As the U.S. Open heads into its third round on Friday, only three of the top 10 seeds remain in the women's draw. The competition began on Monday, and after just two rounds the list of top-10 women to advance has dwindled significantly.

No. 1 seeded Serena Williams is accompanied by No. 2 Simona Halep and No. 5 Petra Kvitova in the short list of remaining elite women players. Williams will take on Bethanie Mattek-Sands on Day 5.

Caroline Wozniacki became the the seventh top-seeded woman to be eliminated from the competition on Thursday night, adding to the list of surprising upsets.

1. Serena Williams - Advanced to the third round

3. Maria Sharapova - Forced to withdraw from U.S. Open before its start due to a leg injury

4. Caroline Wozniacki - Eliminated in the second round after an upset by No. 149 Petra Cetkovska

6.Lucie Safarova - Lost in the first round to No. 37 Lesia Tsurenko

7. Ana Ivanovic - Eliminated in the first round in an upset by No. 50 Dominika Cibulkova

8. Karolina Pliskova - Lost in the first round to No. 121 Anna Tatishvili

9. Garbine Muguruza - Eliminated in the second round in an upset by No. 97 Johanna Konta
