Serena Williams tops sister Venus in three sets in U.S. Open quarterfinal

Serena Williams advanced to the U.S. Open semifinals with a 6–2, 1–6, 6–3 victory over sister Venus their quarterfinal match Tuesday night.

Serena will face Roberta Vinci in the semifinals on Thursday as she aims to make her fifth straight U.S. Open final.

Serena now leads the all-time head-to-head series with 16 wins to Venus's 11. Serena has won three of five meetings against Venus at the U.S. Open. On Tuesday, she hit 35 winners and made 22 unforced errors to her sister's 24 and 15. Serena also recorded 12 aces to Venus's eight.

The younger Williams sister is looking to win the calendar Grand Slam, a feat that has not been accomplished since Steffi Graf did it in 1988. Serena is also looking for her fifth consecutive Grand Slam title and her fourth straight U.S. Open title. 

Over their careers, the sisters have won 115 singles titles and 28 singles majors in their careers. The last time Serena lost to Venus at a Grand Slam was Wimbledon in 2008.
