''It was more difficult than it looked,'' said Stosur, the 2011 U.S. Open champion from Australia. ''She has improved quite a lot from the last time I met her but I thought I played very well.''

Stosur will next face Heather Watson, who beat Taiwanese qualifier Lee Ya-hsuan 6-0, 6-7 (5), 6-4.

Sixth-seeded Daria Gavrilova also advanced, beating Lara Arrubarrena of Spain 7-6 (4), 6-1.
