Simona Halep was upset by Chinese qualifier Shuai Zhang in the Australian Open first round.

No. 2-seed Simona Halep was upset by Shuai Zhang in the first round of Australian Open on Tuesday.

World No. 133 Zhang had never won a Grand Slam match in 14 tries before beating World No. 2 Halep on Tuesday in her opening match on Margaret Court Arena.

Before the tournament, Halep lost in the semifinals of the Sydney International tournament to Svetlana Kuznetsova in three sets. Zhang played through Australian Open qualifying, winning three matches to earn a spot in the main draw.

At last year's Australian Open, Halep lost in straight sets in the quarterfinals to Ekaterina Makarova. With No. 2-seed Halep's loss, the remaining seeds in Halep's quarter are Karolina Pliskova, Madison Keys, Ana Ivanovic, Makarova and Sabine Lisicki.
