Daily Data Viz: Andy Murray, David Ferrer distance run in Melbourne

Andy Murray will take on David Ferrer in the Australian Open, a match up of solid return games and two evenly-matched top players.

At the Australian Open on Wednesday, No. 2-seed Andy Murray will take on No. 8-seed David Ferrer in the quarterfinals. Murray leads their head-to-head meetings 12-6 and has won the last five times they have played. Both men have great return games but Murray has the more powerful serve. Both players cover court really well but Murray has greater reach at 6'3" than Ferrer does at 5' 9". Both players have solid forehands—more winners than unforced forehand errors— but Murray has the much better backhand. Ferrer's numbers on serve through four rounds are phenomenal—76% 1st serves won, 69% won on 2nd serve and broken only twice in 58 service games—but he hasn't played anyone who returns like Murray. If Ferrer can keep up those type of serving numbers he'll pull the upset and advance to the semifinals.
