Brengle overcomes Makarova in first round in Dubai
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) In her Dubai Tennis Championships debut, American Madison Brengle came from behind in both sets to beat Russia's Ekaterina Makarova 6-4, 7-5 in the first round on Monday.
Brengle trailed 2-0 in the first set, and 4-0 in the second.
The left-handed Makarova was a Dubai quarterfinalist last year, losing to eventual champion Simona Halep in three sets.
Brengle will play another lefty in fourth-seeded Petra Kvitova in the second round.
Brengle upset Kvitova in straight sets in the only other time they've played, on Stuttgart's clay last year.
