Ostapenko, Cornet, Giorgi make 2nd round of Katowice Open

KATOWICE, Poland (AP) Third-seeded Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia beat qualifier Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia 6-1, 6-1 to advance to the second round of the Katowice Open on Tuesday.

The 2014 champion, fourth-seeded Alize Cornet of France, struggled in the second set before defeating qualifier Isabella Shinikova of Bulgaria 6-2, 6-7 (5), 6-3. She next plays Francesca Schiavone of Italy after her 6-4, 6-3 win over lucky loser Valeriya Strakhova of Ukraine, while Ostapenko takes on Czech player Kristyna Pliskova.

In another game, fifth-seeded Camila Giorgi of Italy beat Aliaksandra Sasnovich of Belarus 6-4, 6-4 and will face qualifier Ekaterina Alexandrova of Russia, who defeated Klara Koukalova of the Czech Republic 6-0, 7-6 (5).

Also Tuesday, eighth-seeded Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia came from a set down to overcome Germany's Carina Witthoeft 6-7 (6), 6-4, 7-6 (3) and Naomi Broady of Britain rallied to advance with a 6-7 (6), 6-4, 6-4 victory over Karin Knapp of Italy.

Swiss qualifier Viktorija Golubic made the second round by beating Polish wild card Paula Kania 6-7 (2), 6-1, 6-2, while another Polish player, Magda Linette, defeated wild card Anastasiya Shoshyna of Ukraine 6-1, 7-6 (5).
