Billie Jean King returns to New York with new Empire team

NEW YORK (AP) Billie Jean King and her World Team Tennis league have returned to the venue where she won four U.S. Open singles titles.

The New York Empire are competing in Forest Hills Stadium at the West Side Tennis Club, the former site of the U.S. Open through 1977. The new Empire team is coached by Patrick McEnroe.

It's one of six teams in the league, which features two weeks of co-ed professional matches through Aug. 13.

The Empire will offer theme nights, including LGBTQ Pride Night on Wednesday against the Springfield Lasers. Andy Roddick and Christina McHale will play for the Empire on Aug. 9 against the Washington Kastles.

King will appear for the Salute to Strong Women Night when the Empire host the Orange County Breakers on Aug. 11.

The WTT finals will be played at Forest Hills Stadium on Aug. 26, with live coverage on ESPN2 at 5 p.m. ET.
