WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) John Millman upset top-seeded Richard Gasquet 7-5, 6-3 in the Winston-Salem Open quarterfinals Thursday.

Millman advanced to his first ATP World Tour semifinal. The 27-year-old Australian is unseeded and 81st in the ATP rankings.

Gasquet, in the ATP rankings, holds the No. 13 seed in the U.S. Open, which begins Monday in New York. The Frenchman was playing his fifth match in six weeks after retiring in the fourth round at Wimbledon because of back problems. He returned last week in Cincinnati and lost in the second round.
