No. 1 seed Simona Halep will face Venus Williams on Saturday, Jan. 19 in third round of the 2019 Australian Open. 

Williams, 38, entered the Open unseeded–her first time entering a major as so since the 2014 Australian Open. The seven-time Grand Slam champion overcame 25th-seeded Mihaela Buzarnescu 6–7, 7–6, 6–2 in the first round before defeating Alize Cornet in the second for a 6–3, 4–6, 6–0 win. 

Halep, the reigning French Open champion, trailed Kaia Kanepi by a set in the first round before emerging with a 6–7, 6–4, 6–2 win. She went on to beat Sofia Kenin on Thursday, 6–3, 6–7, 6–4 victory.

The two will meet at Margaret Court Arena.
