Barbaro gets loose during a false start, breaking from the gate.

Jockey Garrett K. Gomez aboard Like Now set the early pace in the 131st Preakness.

Barbaro was in the middle of the pack when he suddenly dropped back, favoring his right rear leg.

Barbaro was favoring his right rear leg as jockey Edgar Prado pulled him to a stop just past the finish line and jumped off.

Bernardini (right), who took a major step up in class in just his fourth career start, came into the Preakness off an impressive win in the Withers Stakes at Aqueduct on April 29.

Bernardini's winning time for the 1 3-16 miles was 1:54.65, off the stakes record of 1:53.40.

Barbaro was taken back to his barn, where he was X-rayed, tranquilized and stabilized before being transported the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center.

Barbaro jockey Edgar Prado is consoled after the race.
