Skier Lanzinger retires, 7 years after losing leg in crash

VIENNA (AP) Former World Cup skier Matthias Lanzinger of Austria is retiring, seven years after he had his lower left leg amputated following a crash in a race in Norway.

A day after winning silver in the super-G at the IPC Alpine skiing world championships in Panorama, British Columbia, Lanzinger told Austrian radio ''the worlds are a nice event to end your career with.''

The 34-year-old Lanzinger took the overall Europa Cup title in 2004 but failed to win a World Cup race. The faltering rescue operation after his crash in 2008 sparked a debate about safety regulations in World Cup ski racing.

Lanzinger started competing on the Europa Cup circuit for disabled athletes in 2011, and won silver medals in super-G and combined last year at the Paralympics in Sochi.
