MINNEAPOLIS (AP) Janel McCarville has told the Minnesota Lynx she will not play this season.

The Lynx made the surprising announcement Wednesday, just over three weeks before they open the season on June 5. It was not immediately clear the reasons behind her decision.

McCarville was a star at the University of Minnesota and returned to play for the Lynx in 2013. She helped them win the WNBA championship that season. Last year she averaged 7.9 points, 4.8 rebounds and 3.1 assists in helping the Lynx to the Western Conference finals.

The Lynx moved quickly to plug the hole. They acquired 11-year veteran Asjha Jones from the Connecticut Sun in exchange for the team's 2016 second-round draft pick. Jones has missed the last two seasons with injuries.
