Georgetown-UConn to renew old Big East hoops rivalry
Friday October 24th, 2014

Former Big East Conference members Georgetown and Connecticut will renew their rivalry in basketball with a home-and-home series starting in 2016, UConn announced Friday.

Georgetown will travel to Connecticut on Jan. 23, 2016, and will host the Huskies at Washington D.C.’s Verizon Center on Jan. 21, 2017.

The rivalry began in 1958 and spanned 64 games, with Georgetown leading the series 35-29. When they were in the Big East, Georgetown had a 32-26 lead in the rivalry.

Georgetown and Connecticut each won seven Big East Conference Tournament championships. The storied rivalry seemed doomed when UConn bolted for the American Athletic Conference while Georgetown chose to stay in the basketball-only Big East.

The teams split their last four games, but Georgetown won the last contest, 79-78 in double overtime on Feb. 27, 2013. UConn last beat the Hoyas 79-62 in March 2011 during the second round of Big East Tournament. Connecticut went on to win the national title that year.

Georgetown will also renew a rivalry with another former Big East foe, Syracuse. They will start a four-year home-and-home series next year.
