Referees call controversial goaltend in SMU-UCLA game
Thursday March 19th, 2015

SMU center Yanick Moreira blamed himself after his team's NCAA tournament second-round loss to UCLA on Thursday.

With 13 seconds remaining in the game and SMU up 59-57, Moreira was called for goaltending on a Bryce Alford three-point attempt, giving UCLA a 60-57 lead. The Mustangs were unable to convert multiple attempts on the following possession, and UCLA advanced.

"It's all my fault," Moreira said after the game.

Moreira also tweeted an apology to SMU fans.

After the game, pundits and athletes debated whether officials had made the right call, as it was unclear whether Moreira impeded the ball's path to the basket.

Moreira, a senior, finished the game with six points, eight rebounds and two blocks.
