Wisconsin Badgers coach Bo Ryan said after his team beat the Kentucky Wildcats on Saturday night, he has gotten texts comparing the feat to the United States "Miracle on Ice" team who beat Russia in the 1980 Olympics.
Bo Ryan: Our women's hockey coach reminded me, "You know after [the 1980 US hockey team] beat Russia, we had to beat Finland."— NCAA March Madness (@marchmadness) April 5, 2015
The Badgers' women's hockey coach, Mark Johnson, was on the 1980 team.
Wisconsin beat Kentucky, 71-64, on Saturday, which was the team's first loss this season. They finished their year with a record of 38-1.
The 1980 Russia team had won the previous four Olympic hockey gold medals. After the United States beat Russia, they still had to beat Finland in the gold medal game. The team trailed Finland 2-1 in the third period, but came back to win, 4 to 2.
