Report: John Calipari close to signing one-year extension at Kentucky
Coach John Calipari is close to signing a one-year contract extension with the Kentucky Wildcats worth $8 million that would keep him with the team through the 2022 season. The news was first reported by Kentucky Sports Radio and confirmed by ESPN.
The 56 year old coach, who was set to begin the second year of a seven-year, $52.5 million contract extension this summer, will earn a $1.6 million "longevity bonus" in July, according to KSR.
The move could quash speculation that Calipari would leave the school for the NBA where several of his former players are playing.
As many as seven members of the 2015 Wildcats team that won 38 consecutive games before losing to Wisconsin in the Final Four could leave for the NBA. Between the 2010 and 2012 seasons, 15 Kentucky players were drafted by NBA teams.
Kentucky's 2015 recruiting class includes two five-star prospects: 6 foot 10 Memphis prep star Skal Labissiere and Union, N.J., point guard Isaiah Briscoe.
