The SEC has granted linebacker Maurice Smith’s request to transfer from Alabama to Georgia, the conference announced Friday.

Smith graduated from from Alabama earlier this month and told Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban he planned on transferring to Georgia. Saban initially refused to grant Smith a transfer to an in-conference school, but relented after public pressure.

Alabama granted Smith’s release Thursday, leaving it up to the SEC to allow Smith to transfer. Smith needed exceptions for two SEC bylaws to transfer, which the conference agreed to make for academic purposes.

At Georgia, Smith will be re-united with former Crimson Tide defensive coordinator Kirby Smart.
