The Buffalo Bills will activate linebacker IK Enemkpali to prevent another team from stealing him off their practice squad while he serves a four-game suspension, reports NFL.com's Ian Rapoport.

Enemkpali was suspended without pay for the first four games of the season for violating the league’s personal conduct policy when he punched and broke quarterback Geno Smith’s jaw as a member of the New York Jets.

Prior to his roster activation, Enemkpali was a member of Buffalo’s practice squad following his release as part of final roster cuts. He played three preseason games with the Bills after being released by the Jets in the wake of the locker-room incident with Smith.

Smith is expected to miss at least the Jets’ first four games with his injury. He has no plans to file charges against his former teammate.

Buffalo opens the season Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts.
