Honduras national team defensive midfielder Arnold Peralta was shot and killed on Thursday. He was 26.
Peralta was shot in the parking lot of Uniplaza mall in La Ceiba, reports the Associated Press. He was in his hometown for vacation after the club’s season came to a close.
According to the police, there are no current suspects for the murder and the motive is unclear. Police released a statement that said they have ruled out robbery as a possible motive for the attack.
“This is terrible,” Peralta’s father, Carols Peralta, said during a news conference on Thursday. “They killed my exemplary son. I can't say more because of the pain I feel.”
“This is a tragic death that the national sport mourns,” said Osman Madrid, director of Honduras’ national soccer federation.
Peralta began playing for Club Deportivo Olimpia in the Honduran national soccer league this year.
Peralta previously played for the Rangers in Scotland and Club Deportivo Vida in Honduras. He was a member of Honduras's 2014 World Cup team and represented Honduras at the 2012 Olympics in London.
