The Cleveland Guardians and Kansas City Royals wrap up a four-game set on Thursday afternoon, and Cleveland needs a win to come away with a 2-2 split.

The Guardians are in first place in a weak AL Central so far this season, sitting at 19-19 through 38 games. Meanwhile, the Royals are starting to turn things around after a slow start, winning seven of their last 10 games to move into fourth place in the division at 17-20. So, a win on Thursday would put Kansas City within striking distance for the division lead. 

The Royals are favored at home in this series finale with Seth Lugo (2.68 ERA) on the mound against struggling Guardians starter Slade Cecconi.

Outside of a rough outing against the Los Angeles Angels where he allowed 14 hits and seven runs, Lugo has been pretty lights out this season, allowing two or fewer earned runs in his other six outings.

He’s also worked deep into just about every game, recording 16 or more outs in six of his seven appearances, including that matchup with the Angels. So, I think he’s undervalued in this outs recorded prop against a Cleveland offense that is 24th in OPS, 27th in batting average and 20th in runs scored in the 2026 season.

Lugo has had a pretty long leash all season, and I don’t see that changing on Thursday afternoon. 

Guardians vs. Royals Prediction and Pick

The Royals are 4-3 in Lugo’s starts in the 2026 season, and the veteran right-hander ranks in the 51st percentile in expected ERA, despite his shaky performance against the Angels. 

He’s given the Royals a pretty solid floor, allowing two or fewer earned runs in all but one of his outings in 2026. 

Meanwhile, the Guardians are just 1-6 when Cecconi is on the mound, and he’s struggled to keep them in games. The 26-year-old has allowed four or more runs in five of his seven starts, and he ranks in the 17th percentile in expected ERA and the 14th percentile in expected batting average against. 

Cleveland and Kansas City both rank in the bottom 10 in the league in Weighted Runs Created Plus (wRC+), so I don’t mind trusting the better starter to lead his team to a win on Thursday.
