National Championship Opening Odds: Michigan, Arizona Favored in Hypothetical Matchups

In this story:
The Final Four is officially set and it's scheduled to take place on Saturday night.
One side of the bracket will feature a game between a 2-seed UConn Huskies and a 3-seed Illinois Fighting Illini. The other national semifinal will be a matchup between the two final 1-seeds, the Michigan Wolverines and Arizona Wildcats.
We don't yet know which two teams will face off in the National Championship, but FanDuel Sportsbook has already released odds for the four potential matchups. As you would likely expect, the winner of Michigan vs. Arizona will be favored, no matter their opponents.
Let's take a look at the odds and a quick breakdown for each potential matchup.
March Madness Final Opening Odds
Illinois vs. Arizona National Championship Opening Odds
Spread
- Illinois +4.5 (-108)
- Arizona -4.5 (-112)
Moneyline
- Illinois +160
- Arizona -196
Total
- OVER 152.5 (-110)
- UNDER 152.5 (-110)
Illinois had an impressive win against Texas Tech early in the season, a team that would go on to hand Arizona one of its two regular-season losses. If the Wildcats face Illinois in the final, it will be their third straight game against an Illinois opponent after facing Purdue and Michigan. This matchup would be an interesting showdown between a three-point shooting team in Illinois and a two-point shooting team in Arizona. This game has the lowest spread of the four potential matchups.
UConn vs. Arizona National Championship Opening Odds
Spread
- UConn +5.5 (-105)
- Arizona -5.5 (-115)
Moneyline
- UConn +198
- Arizona -245
Total
- OVER 143.5 (-110)
- UNDER 143.5 (-110)
UConn and Arizona have faced each other once already this season. The Wildcats beat the Huskies in Connecticut on November 19 by a score of 71-67. Arizona out-rebounded UConn 43-23, so if these two teams meet in the final, the Huskies will have to find a way to do a better job on the glass. This game has the lowest total of the four potential matchups.
Illinois vs. Michigan National Championship Opening Odds
Spread
- Illinois +5.5 (-115)
- Michigan -5.5 (-105)
Moneyline
- Illinois +176
- Michigan -215
Total
- OVER 156.5 (-110)
- UNDER 156.5 (-110)
Illinois and Michigan faced each other just once during Big Ten play this year. The Wolverines cruised past the Fighting Illini, winning by a final score of 84-70. Michigan shot 53% from the field, so Illinois will have to tighten up defensively if they want to win a potential rematch. This game has the highest total of the four potential matchups.
UConn vs. Michigan National Championship Opening Odds
Spread
- UConn +6.5 (-115)
- Michigan -6.5 (-105)
Moneyline
- UConn +210
- Michigan -260
Total
- OVER 147.5 (-110)
- UNDER 147.5 (-110)
This would be just the fourth time in program history, and the first time in the NCAA Tournament, that these two teams have met. UConn is 2-1 all-time against the Wolverines, including winning the most recent matchup, which was at the Maui Invitational in 2015, winning by a score of 74-60. This game has the largest spread of the four potential matchups.
