NBA MVP Odds: Victor Wembanyama Rising Ahead of Luka Doncic vs. SGA Showdown

Back-to-back 40-point games from San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama have altered the NBA MVP odds with some crucial games ahead on Thursday night.
Wembanyama, who was +250 to win the MVP before Wednesday’s game against the Golden State Warriors, has moved up to +220 in the latest odds. Oklahoma City Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander – the favorite in this market – has seen his odds drop from -350 to -300 in the process.
Wembanyama has been gaining on Gilgeous-Alexander in recent weeks, and the Spurs are now just two games behind the Thunder for the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference.
The latest movement in the MVP market is notable, as April 2 marks the first of two games left this season between the Thunder and Los Angeles Lakers. Luka Doncic (+1500 to win MVP) is third behind SGA and Wemby in the MVP odds, and his Lakers have jumped into the No. 3 spot in the Western Conference standings by going 17-5 since the All-Star break.
There’s a chance Doncic could improve his odds to win MVP on Thursday, especially if he outplays Gilgeous-Alexander and the Lakers win. The Spurs are also in action on April 2, as they’ll play the Los Angeles Clippers on the second night of a back-to-back.
So, there’s a chance Wembanyama and the Spurs could be just one game back of the Thunder in the West standings by the end of the night, which would likely tighten this race. There has been recent momentum for Wembanyama, who jumped Doncic in the odds to win MVP late last week.
All three players have deserving cases to win MVP, and Friday will be a crucial day for the MVP race since ESPN’s Tim Bontemps is set to release his final straw poll from MVP voters. If the votes from that poll are overwhelmingly favoring one candidate, it almost certainly will shift this market in that player’s favor.
