The Boston Red Sox have been one of the hottest teams in baseball over the last six weeks, but they’re currently on a three-game skid heading into Game 2 of their series against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Boston dropped Monday’s series opener 2-1, and it’s set as an underdog on Tuesday with lefty Patrick Sandoval on the mound against Jays ace Dylan Cease.

This season, Cease has a 2.28 ERA and is one of the leading candidates to win the AL Cy Young award. He’s posted a 0.84 ERA since July 1, and the Jays are five games over .500 when he starts despite being 57-63 overall this season.

Toronto is still on the outside looking in of the playoff race in the American League, but another win over Boston would certainly improve its chances of sneaking into the final wild card spot.

Dylan Cease UNDER 4.5 Hits Allowed (-161)

Boston has the fourth-best batting average in MLB over the last 30 days, but this is a really tough matchup against Cease, who is making a serious case to win his first Cy Young.

The Blue Jays right-hander has given up just 80 hits in 126.1 innings of work this season, posting a 1.04 WHIP. He’s given up four or fewer hits in 12 of his last 13 starts dating back to May 13.

So, why not take him to keep that trend going on Tuesday?

Cease ranks in the 96th percentile in both expected ERA and expected batting average against, and he’s in the 90th percentile in barrel percentage. The Jays righty has a 0.84 ERA since July 1, allowing just 17 total hits in six starts.

I think this number is a little high, even with Boston playing well over the last month.

This game features a strong starting pitching matchup, and I explained how to bet on both starters in today’s MLB Best Bets column:

An interesting pitching matchup is set for Tuesday night in Toronto, as Cy Young candidate Dylan Cease (2.28 ERA) takes the mound for the Jays against Boston’s Patrick Sandoval.

This is just the sixth time in 2026 that Sandoval will take the mound, but he’s led the Sox to a 5-0 record while putting together a 3.38 ERA. Sandoval has given up two or fewer runs in four of those outings.

Meanwhile, Cease has a 0.84 ERA since July 1, including seven innings of scoreless ball against a tough Chicago Cubs team his last time out.

Boston has been red hot and is now in the mix for the top wild card spot in the American League, but I’d expect a low-scoring game in the early innings on Tuesday.

Toronto’s offense has been shaky all season long, ranking 29th in the league in Weighted Runs Created Plus (wRC+), so I wouldn’t be shocked if this is a pitcher’s duel until the bullpens get involved.
